MARC TADDEI

appointed

Music Director
Vector Wellington
Orchestra

(Auckland, 23 November 2005) Conductor Marc Taddei has been appointed Music Director of the Vector Wellington Orchestra, effective January 2007. He has already begun work with VWO management, planning for the 2007season and beyond.

In announcing the appointment last week, Vector Wellington General Manager Christine Pearce said, "This is a landmark in the history of the Orchestra. The continuity of having a resident Music Director will further grow and develop the Orchestra. We are delighted to have someone of Marc's ability and accomplishment to inaugurate the position."

Taddei is currently Music Director of the Christchurch Symphony, having been appointed to that position in 2002 to oversee the programming and artistic development of the orchestra, following a one-year appointment as Principle Guest Conductor in 2001. Taddei will step down from his position in Christchurch at the end of 2006 when his contract expires. During his five seasons the orchestra experienced substantial increases in audience numbers, and he has been repeatedly singled out by critics for the orchestra's extraordinary artistic gains and his imaginative, innovative programming. He looks forward to effecting the same kinds of successes with the Vector Wellington Orchestra.

In farewelling Taddei, Christchurch Symphony Trust Board Chair Felicity Price said, "The CEO, board and orchestra send our warm congratulations to Marc. He has been an inspirational influence for the orchestra over the last five years, and we wish him every success in Wellington. Christchurch Symphony has benefited enormously from his infectious enthusiasm, expertise and innovative programming."

Christchurch Symphony CEO Murray Shaw has been warm in his praise as well: "Marc's new appointment will give us an opportunity to build a good collegial relationship with the Vector Wellington Orchestra. We are looking forward to working with Marc during our 2006 programme."

Taddei himself is naturally excited about the appointment and keen to recreate his Christchurch successes in Wellington. "This is such an extraordinary opportunity to be involved with another of New Zealand's professional orchestras," he said. The Vector Wellington Orchestra has such a vibrant base of professional players, and it's a privilege to be appointed their first music director. I look forward to working together with them, their management and Board to take the Orchestra to a new level of excellence."

Marc Taddei was born in New Jersey and now holds dual citizenship with New Zealand, where he has lived since 1987. Inspiring and charismatic, Taddei is known for the passion and attitude he brings to performances. In addition to conducting every professional orchestra in New Zealand, he has also begun to appear overseas, most recently in Hong Kong, Oregon, New Orleans and Fort Worth. This year Marc made his Australian debut with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and has been invited to conduct the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra next June.

Last year Taddei led his first major tour with the Royal New Zealand Ballet and has been re-engaged to conduct their next tour in March 2006, which features the premiere of (Whale Rider Author) Witi Ihimaera's "The Wedding" to a new score by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr.

Marc's discography shows familiarity with an exceptionally large variety of musical styles, and several of his CD recordings have been nominated for special distinctions. In 2003 his Sony recording with Bic Runga and the Christchurch Symphony went double platinum. Marc is currently involved in New Zealand's largest ever classical recording project with Rattle Records and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Marc expects to bring further recording opportunities with him to the Vector Wellington Orchestra.
